The 1st edition of l'Etape Cyprus by Tour de France took place on November 13th. More than 300 cyclists had the chance to discover the amazing Cyprian landscapes
For its first edition, L'Etape Cyprus by Tour de France has been a real success for the riders and all people who came to cheer and enjoy the atmosphere of the event. On August 13th, 300 riders took started from Aphrodite Hills Resort to challenge through one of the 2 race formats: the Race (136km) & the Ride (62km). The peloton was mainly composed from international participants who came to discover Cyprus and challenge themselves through the challenging routes of the event.
THE RACES
At seven o'clock in the morning, 300 cyclists started their race to from Aphrodite Hills Resort, either through the 135km or the 62km format. The route started with a short downhill for reaching sea level, before starting the never ending 62km climb to reach the roof of the country, the Mount Olympus. The route offered to participants all the landscapes you can enjoy in Cyprus and crossing as well villages where local people were cheering the riders in a very nice atmosphere.
The peloton included many cyling personalities such as John Degenkolb (professional rider at Team DSM and former Tour de France stage, Paris Roubaix & Milano San Remo winner) ambassador of the event, but also the retired profesionnal cyclist and former Tour de France stage winner Illnur Zakarin, or the national cycling champion Andreas Miltiadis.
First time for me here and for L'Etape by Tour de France here in Cyprus ! It was a great experience and great adventure, we started all togeter with 300 participants today and everyone had lot of fun: the route was really nice but also very demanding from the beginning. On the top of the first climb we were only with 30 guys left in the front group then it kept on going up to 2000 meters climbing. I really enjoyed it, with great guys arround me, and at the end we were sprinting up to the finish line in Aphrodite Hills, with a tough climb to finish this journey. Definitely a great experience and I'm really happy to be here this year and I hope being there next year ! ''
John Degenkolb, professionnal cyclist and L'Etape Cyprus ambassador
The Race, queen stage of the event, was won by local national champion Andreas Miltiadis. The 26 years old rider managed to succeed at home after a tough fight with the brothers Aidar and Illnur Zakarin, former professional riderrs. Andreas made the gap in the last climb of the race and finally crossed the line in first position, full of emotion.
I'm very happy that L'Etape by Tour de France came in Cyprus form the first time. I think everyone enjoyed the course and the perfect weather. I'm super happy to have won this 1st edtion in my country and I hope there will be more people next year to enjoy the experience and I also hope to be back next year for the 2nd edition !
